Adam Goldberg Pilot aka Imaginary Mary - Outline

This is a fast moving, good script and we enjoyed it, so we should refer back to it. It's one of the best attempts in the imaginary friend sub genre. The imaginary friend is fun, but there are good stakes for the lead character as well. Jenna Elfman ended up starring in this. I also remember admiring how they handled her office place in this script.

Written by Adam Golberg
COLD OPEN: p. 1-9
  • meet kid alice and imaginary friend
  • quick cuts prove she needed the friend to mature normally despite shitty parents
  • then the friend goes away cuz alice is an awesome adult who doesn’t need her
  • we see alice as a PR whiz at work.
  • We see Alice fall for a guy she is interviewing
  • But she’s freaked out by his kids so when they almost meet her she bails and jumps out the window
  • ACT OUT: Voiceover tells us that Mary is back.

ACT ONE: p. 10-18
  • Ben tells his kids about Alice
  • Ben and Alice meet up to make a gameplan for telling the kids but Mary the imaginary friend shows up so Alice freaks out and leaves
  • Mary chases Alice down the street as Alice tries to act like she doesn’t exist.
  • Mary convinces Alice to slow down on this whole meeting the kids thing.
  • Alice tries to stall by buying ‘meet the kids’ concert tix for 6 months from now but then she cracks and agrees to meet them TONIGHT
  • ACT OUT: Mary is very skeptical.

ACT TWO: p. 18-30
  • Alice cleans the place as Mary tells her this is a bad idea.
  • The kids arrive. Mary has a moment with weird andy. Then the bf tells her to to chill out. Then she has a moment with the weird daughter. Then she learns that her rug was ruined by weird andy and races out--
  • TO THE LIVING ROOM:  carpet is ruined. Then the baby ruins the guitar. Then the weird andy rushes out b/c of social media disaster and he says he needs alice to help him.
  • IN THE BATHROOM: Alice tries to help Andy. Fails. Mary tells her to give up, so Alice tells Ben that she gives up.
  • QUICK CUTS: Alice and Mary have a wild night. Dance. Tacos. Puke in street garbage can.
  • ACT OUT: Alice gets kicked out of the karaoke bar.

ACT THREE: p.31-36
  • Alice wakes up drunk and regretting and mad at Mary. Ben shows up and surprises her. He brings her food. Tells her they’re just having a fight and it’s gonna be fine.
  • Alice with the kids again. It seems like it’s going okay.
  • Alice takes them to karaoke. Last night she was only singing half the song and imagining Mary singing the rest. But now she’s got the guy and his kids joining her.
  • ACT OUT: Mary asserts that this is gonna be a clusterfuck.

TAG: p. 37-38
- Chuck Liddell (Alice’s client from cold open) helps make the weird kid popular at school. Alice is there. So is Mary. Mary asserts that she’s gonna stick around, and Alice says “please do.”

Note: This was pretty simple. Also I like the kids in this show. They are young but unique and not totally familiar. They are likable. Also I like that they use the term “HERO WALK” to describe that slo-mo walk that you see so often.

ALSO NOTE: Alice and Mary are kind of like a mother and child in some ways. So in that way, this show mirrors our show. This was a solid show. Contender for our pie of influences for LARRY UNITED.

    NOTE

These outlines are not polished and they are not politically correct. They are bare bones and often do no justice to the script or the writers of said script. Posting the outlines here so they can be easily referenced when working on new pilots.  Also thought they might be helpful to other writers out there.

    Enjoy!
