Buffalo Bill by Tom Patchett & Jay Tarses (outline)

Never seen an episode of this show but I remember loving the pilot when we read it a few years ago.

This felt like the origin of the type of character that Danny McBride always plays. Very ahead of its time. Loved it. Outline on next page.

COLD OPEN

Clips show us that Bill is a popular show anchor. Then we meet him necking with a woman, pulling himself away and plastering a smile on his face to greet the audience

ACT ONE

SCENE 1: We meet the director. She’s shocked that they’re deep into the show and nothing bad has happened yet. She’s also convinced that Bill is “gonna do something terrible.”

SCENE 2: Bill calls his guest sleazy. Then signs off.

SCENE 3: Cameras off. Show wrapped. Bill tries to get into business that he just called sleazy on TV a minute ago. Bill learns that a guy he hates and his competitor news man just died. He gets very distraught (even though before he thought he was dead he ripped him apart). Insists on being alone.

SCENE 4, In Bill’s Dressing Room: Bill keeps faking grief. Sneaks a phone call to his agent to try to get the dead guy’s job.

SCENE 5: Bill brings the director flowers. Says she has to make him look good that night. Cuz he wants the job. A big honcho shows up and his name is Dan. The program director guy asks Bill not to do something terrible to impress Dan and Bill vows not to.

SCENE 6: Shooting the show again. Bill grandstands about the dead guy. Releases a banner that falls and knocks his guest off her seat.

ACT TWO

SCENE 1: Bill asks Jo Jo to sleep with Dan to get Bill the job. It’s interrupted when Dan shows up… Turns out a date was already on the books between Dan and Jo-Jo.

SCENE 2: Bill is nervous about what if he didn’t get the job, but he tries to hide it. Scene ends as he learns he idn’t get the job. (PROBABLY ON P.45 OUT OF 59)

SCENE 3: Music is up. Time for Bill to come out on stage. But he’s nowhere to be found.

SCENE 4: The director’s booth crew is wondering where Bill is.

SCENE 5: Stage manager finds Bill in a daze, leads him out to the stage.

SCENE 6: Bill back on stage. Cameras running. Bill gives a fake speech about how he CHOSE to stay in Buffalo. But he realizes on the act out, that this is where he’ll be (probably for the rest of his life).

SCENE 7: Bill is offered a research assistant. He hates it until a pretty girl (the daughter of the guy who died whose job he wanted) shows up. Then he offers it to her right away.

THE END.

    NOTE

These outlines are not polished and they are not politically correct. They are bare bones and often do no justice to the script or the writers of said script. Posting the outlines here so they can be easily referenced when working on new pilots.  Also thought they might be helpful to other writers out there.

    Enjoy!
