That famous Adam Sandler movie from the mid 2000s, just with a way more depressing ending.

Written by Steve Koren & Mark O'keefe
CLICK – OUTLINE

  1. MICHAEL’S HOUSE: Meet Michael and his kids,  Samantha and Ben, as he wakes up from an all-nighter on the couch.  Remote control confusion established on page 2. “That’s the ceiling fan, Daddy.” “That’s my race car.” NOTE: Michael has a loving wife, great kids.
    1. Big Problem Established, P.3: “I’ll get to it. It’s just I got a lot of things going on at work and unfortunately work comes first.”
    2. NOTE: Michael is working towards partner, but he’s getting really strung out by it.
    3. ALSO NOTE: This scene sets up that Michael has bad eating habits, but is too harried to deal.
  2. OUTSIDE THE HOUSE: The neighbor kid insults Michael’s car. His dad’s car is better. Michael leaves.
  3. MICHAEL’S OFFICE: Michael hurries in. He’s late. Traffic. He’s nice to his assistant, but he’s harried.
  4. CONFERENCE ROOM: Michael’s pitch for an elegant building is shot down by his clients and his sell-out boss. He’s designing a glorified Hooters.
  5. BOSS’ OFFICE: Boss sets up a big pitch he wants Michael on. Michael tries to squirm out for family vacation, but is pressured into the job. He is then pressured into missing his kid’s swim meet that night for a work thing.
  6. TOWN POOL: Michael barely gets to Ben’s race in time. He’s not winning lots of dad points.
  7. TOWN POOL – LATER: The family tries to bond, but Michael is distracted by a stressful phone call. He freaks out on firecracker teens at the end. He scares everyone. Both his parents and his kids try and fail to connect.
  8. BEDROOM: Michael tells wife that he can’t go camping this weekend. He has to work on his pitch. He angrily has another remote control mishap.
    1. Note: “The O’Doyles have a universal remote and we’re gonna have one too!”

  12. WAY BEYOND: Michael gets the remote from Morty, with the caveat that it’s not returnable
  13.  HOUSE: Michael tries the remote. It works. Donna comes in and makes an issue about his work. He pauses the TV. It pauses HER.  He doesn’t realize what happened…
  14.  LATER: Michael discovers he can use the remote to turn the volume of his barking dog down. He brushes it off, “I guess when you combine cough medicine and yodels you get ACID…”
  15.  LATER: Michael fast forwards the dog. What’s going on?
  16.  THE NEXT MORNING: Donna’s friend is babbling. Michael mutes her. Checking to see if that thing really worked last night. Michael realizes this thing might really work…
  17. OUTSIDE THE HOUSE: Michael rushes out. Runs over the annoying neighbor kids’ robot dog.
  18. BEYOND SECTION: Michael with Morty, assuming this is a reality show. Michael hits MENU on remote, and sees all the options… It’s like a DVD menu. Michael plays the commentary..
  19. AT WORK: Michael and Morty at Michael’s office, last Tuesday… It’s Alec Baldwin commentary of Micahel freaking out b/c his lunch order was wrong

  22. BLACK: Sometime after conception.

  47.  DINNER WITH JAPANESE CLIENTS: Not going well. Michael uses remote to eavesdrop and translate convo… Then he saves the pitch using info he learned. He cuts all the details from his plan to maximize revenue in the building… an interesting reflection of what happened in the earlier scene, but now HE is the one selling out.
  48.  HOME: Mike gives gifts to the family, happy that he saved the big account. Donna references their first song…

    NOTE

These outlines are not polished and they are not politically correct. They are bare bones and often do no justice to the script or the writers of said script. Posting the outlines here so they can be easily referenced when working on new pilots.  Also thought they might be helpful to other writers out there.

    Enjoy!
