Kate and Allie, Episode 2 - Outline

This is a show from the 80s that we found in the WGA Library. The scripts were really good. It's about two moms who get divorced and then move in with each other (each bringing their kids with them). A unique blended family show that would honestly be pretty interesting even today. Maybe we could write a show like this, but make it two women and their adult children moving in together. Could be a fun way to explore modern gender and millennial themes. Especially if we do it in the rust belt or something.

Written by David Handler & Peter Gethers
ACT ONE OUT: Kid decides to extend taping to last ALL WEEK!
ACT TWO OUT: The video screens and shows them all as a real family.

OVER CREDITS
  • girls talk about an old friend that was lumpy but now is doing well and has a rich hubby. Decide they don’t like her.

ACT ONE
  • Kids do dishes and talk school. It’s clear: Allie’s kids are good and hard working. Kate’s daughter not so much.
  • LATER Allie confronts Kate: She thinks Kate needs to push her kid. Kate finally exits to do just that.
  • LATER Kate helps push her kid into doing a movie instead of just a shitty project of  glued leaves.
  • LATER: The house is mayhem. Everyone complaining that they share a room. Then the daughter has an idea: I’ll make my movie oabout our special living situation b/c it’s supposed to be about change and what is more change than divorce?
  • LATER: The filming has begun. We get some good exposition about their families. Everyone acts funny because the camera is on.
  • LATER: They struggle not to argue when the tape is on.
  • ACT OUT: The kid reveals that she decided to extend her taping to last all week!

ACT TWO
  • The moms decide taping has to end. The girl decides only to shoot when the dad is around cuz that’s part of divorce.
  • The moms let her tape again. Teacher said it made the daughter sad at school, so they’re back at it. But the moms decide they will be honest and real now. It’s the only way they can get through it.
  • Emma got an A! BUT… They’re gonna show it to the parents on parent’s night!!!
  • We see the kid’s video: It’s sweet and honest and funny and sad. Divorce is hard. It’s a little emotional. But they’re a family!

TAG
  • Kate has the footage of Allie in the shower. The art teacher thought she might want it. Did he see it? He must have: He wants to take you to dinner Friday night!

    NOTE

These outlines are not polished and they are not politically correct. They are bare bones and often do no justice to the script or the writers of said script. Posting the outlines here so they can be easily referenced when working on new pilots.  Also thought they might be helpful to other writers out there.

    Enjoy!
