Never Been Kissed by Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein - Outline

Great script for character maintaining a lie throughout movie.

1. Meet Josie on a pitcher’s mound. She clarifies this is NOT a dream. She says “I’m not the kind of girl who does things like this. Two months ago you couldn’t have picked me out of a crowd.”
2. Josie at the office. I presume this is two months earlier. Cool cut. We see she’s an expert editor. We see her annoying co worker Merkin doesn’t respect her.
3. JOSIE’S OFFICE. Anita shows up and talks about sex. Classic rom com best friend.
4. CONVO WITH BOSS. Josie wants to move from editor to reporter. He says reporter’s lives are messy and she’s all about control. There’s no way she could do it. She disagrees.
5. LUNCH ROOM: Anita tries to convince Josie to loosen up. Cynthia tells her to have passion and pursue writing. They learn Josie has never felt “that thing” in a kiss. They say if she’s never had that, she’s got even bigger problems.
6. PACKING STORE: Jos visits brother Rob. Loans him money. He’s a slacker who should go back to play college and ball. He says why, “So I can be as happy as you?”
NOTE: The packing store is Hawaii themed called “TIKI POST.” These little cute cozy mystery world details heighten the romance in the script in a good and necessary way.
7. JOSIE AT HOME. Makes a needlepoint pillow. Talks to her pillows. She’s not happy but keeps a smile on.
8. AT WORK. Boss tells Josie she has a reporting assignment. “My Semester in High School.”
9. AT TIKI POST: Rob tells her this is a bad idea. Reminds her what HS was like for her. Josie Grossie.
10. FLASHBACK. We see how the kids picked on her in HS and how nerdy she was.
11. TEEN CLOTHING STORE. Try to shop. Remember bad memories. Anita helps her pick clothes.
NOTE: Classic shopping for a ‘new you’ sequence.
12. HS SEQUENCE: Shows up. Bumbles. Wearing feathers. Late to class. Has to introduce herself. Gets flustered by hot guy that reminds her of her former crush. Bumbles out a weird lie about where she’s from. Getting in deeper…
13. HS FUN AND GAMES. Class with hot teacher who loves her. Prom theme announced as Y2K. Lunch with mean girls. Fitness test in gym.  Makes friends with nerdy girl, Aldys.
14. AFTER SCHOOL. Realizes bullies hid her car b/c they do that to new kids. Goes to hang with Aldys.
15. CALLS BOSS. Says she wants to do a story about crappy cafeteria food. He says that’s not what sells. He needs sex, scandal etc.
16. LATER. Josie agrees to join math club.
17. ANOTHER DAY IN HS.  Math club fun. Then a nerdy book signing at the mall.
18. SCHOOL. Learns bout Shakespeare “as you like it.” “When we’re disguised we feel freer. We can do things we wouldn’t do in ordinary life.”
19. FLASHBACK. Back to HS. Josie learns hot guy Billy Prince is supposedly asking her to prom.
20. HALL. Josie learns prom rivalry with other school is a huge deal.
21. CLASSROOM: Josie goes back to get bag she forgot. Bonds with hot teacher over love for Dorothy Parker.
22. THE COURT. Abandoned cool kid hang out spot. Stop there. Cool Guy “GUY” threatens them to leave and not go to prom. Josie seems intrigued by this spot.
23. WORK. Editor is pissed. Another paper broke the story about the court. Tells Josie she has to hang with the cool kids because that’s where the story is.
24. WORK. Anita rejects Roger because she doesn’t feel ‘that kiss.’
25. PARENT’S HOUSE. Josie considers quitting. Brother convinces her she can be popular and get the story.
26. SCHOOL SEQUENCE. New look. Hidden cam from the boss. They see her flirts with teacher.
27. WORK. Anita hangs with Guy. Looks like she might be into him.
28. GOING OUT. Josie goes to a show where the cool kids will be. Loves it. Gets stoned. Passes out.
29. NEXT DAY AT SCHOOL. Josie has the word “LOSER” on her head from the show because the band was called that or whatever. Blows up in her face. Gets laughed through school. Has flashback to Billy Prince egging her instead of taking her to prom. Vomits and passes out as boss watches from surveillance van. Wakes up and her brother ROB is there. He’s pretending to be a student too. So he can play ball and get to the minors. Plus, he’s cool and that’s exactly what she needs.
30. LATER: everyone loves rob and chants his name.
31. LATER: Aldys is hurt b/c Josie forgot the poetry thing they were gonna go to. Says Josie should forget about them.
32. SEQUENCE: Rob is the coolest kid in school.
33. CARNIVAL: Josie still loser. Now lonely too. Sam the hot teacher rides in Ferris wheel with her. Connection deepens.
34. BASEBALL PRACTICE: Rob tells guys that Josie dumped him and was great at sex basically. The guys are stunned.
35. LUNCH: Josie ditches old friends. Sits with cool kids. They all bought Rob’s lies and are into her now.
36. SCHOOL: Josie’s friend from work Anita shows up to say hi but accidentally ends up leading a HS sex ed seminar. Seniors need a new prom theme and Josie comes up with it. “Famous couples throughout history.”
37. SEQUECNE: Josie pitches weak HS story ideas. Aldys turns against Josie. Josie hangs with new friends.
38. WORK. “If you don’t have that story in two weeks you and Gus are fired. Love the tapes of you at school though.”
39. PARTY AT JOSIE’S PARENTS HOSTED BY ROB: Rob has a HS gf. Josie goes off with GUY. Ends up in her childhood bedroom. “Rob must have loser sister.” Guy asks her to prom and she says yes.
40. SCHOOL: They refuse to sell Aldys prom ticket but she forces them to. Josie is still cool. Josie bonds with Sam over true love.
41. WORK: Gus says you have to write the article about you and hot teacher. How close is too close? Teacher student relations. She says no.
42. PROM NIGHT SEQUENCE: Famous couples from history. Fun idea to make this unique. Rob declines having sex with his drunk 16 y.o. gf. Josie has fun. The nerds arrive and they are having defiant fun as well. Josie named prom queen. INTERCUT with work people watching this on the secret camera.
43. PROM: Josie dances with Sam the teacher. She spots nerd friend dancing with cool guy across room. Realizes cool guy is setting up nerd friend to get dog food dumped on her. This is just like the egging that Josie suffered in HS. Jose saves nerd friend Aldys. Then she admits the truth, tells everyone off, says all that matters is being yourself. Being cool felt good but what really matters is being yourself.
44. OUTSIDE: Sam and Josie argue. He is upset to learn she was a reporter. He tells her to leave him alone.
45. HOME. Rob brothers hows up. She outed them. Ruined his chance to play for pro scouts. He’s angry.
46. WORK. Another paper breaks story of reporter at HS. This is not good for Josie. But she promises they’l get a good story.
47. SCHOOL. Josie returns as reporter Josie. Josie is confident in a way we’ve not yet seen. She makes some kind of deal with the coach but we’re not sure what but she promises to have lots of reporters at the game if he’ll work with her on something…
48. INTERCUTS. Josie’s article. Admits everything. Talks about never been kissed. Apologizes to sam. Says she’ll be there on the pitcher’s mound at the game for 5 minutes before the game starts. Invites her to kiss there there for her first real kiss ever. In front of everyone. We see Sam throw the article away. No idea what will happen but we do though!!!
49. AT THE GAME. Literally there is a ticking clock. Count down. All the way from five minutes to zero seconds. Intercut fans, work people, friends from school, etc. the whole time. See that brother rob is an assistant coach for the HS team now. Anyway, down to zero seconds. Then Sam shows up. They kiss. Anita kisses boss Gus too. The end.
